A 16-year-old girl was killed at a festival in El Paso, Texas, after she and another teenager were ejected from a spinning carnival ride, according to local media.

"In the course of this ride, what hasn't been determined is if the safety bar or the seat belt either failed or was not put on correctly," Elizabeth O'Hara, communications director of the Diocese of El Paso, told reporters.

She said there were three girls riding "The Sizzler" at the time of the accident at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.

"The victim's injuries were severe and EMS arrived and started to do CPR on her here, but it was pretty evident that her injuries were devastating," said O'Hara. "She was then pronounced dead at a local hospital."

The other girl was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The third female was not ejected from the ride and did not sustain any injuries, local media reported.
