I hear that science education in Malta in primary and secondary schools is to be revamped and a new system introduced. Apparently, science teaching at primary school level will be undertaken by the primary school teacher. I think this is wrong as those who are not qualified in science could pass on incorrect concepts to pupils.

I would like to suggest that Maltese flora, fauna, ecosystems and aspects of Maltese geology are included in the syllabus to ensure that schoolchildren value our natural environment.

Science education should consist of information as well as scientific thinking and should be compulsory for all students up to O level standard. A common syllabus should be set, which would include aspects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

It is tragic to see that even high-achieving students do not know what chemical or nuclear reactions are. They are confused with all the mixed messages about radiation and what causes cancer and they do not know why fibre and water in a diet help to keep us healthy.

Maltese students should emerge from Form 5 as scientifically literate students as well as having basic skills in human interaction, drama, public speaking, singing and dancing and an appreciation of the arts.
