Jean-Marc Bosman will be a special guest at tomorrow’s Malta Football Players Association (MFPA) awards night at the Xara Lodge, in Rabat.

Bosman, of Belgium, is the former footballer whose judicial challenge of the transfer rules way back in 1995 led to the Bosman Ruling and the right for football players to move freely to another club at the end of their contract.

The MFPA said they are honoured that Bosman had accepted their invitation to attend the ceremony where the country’s best performers in season 2015-16 will be awarded for their respective achievements.

“Jean Marc Bosman fought and won his case, in front of the European Court of Justice, against the transfer fee at the end of a contract, effectively giving players the right to move without financial repercussions,” the MFPA said in a statement.

“However, while the world of football complied to the Bosman Ruling, 26 years later Malta is still behind the curve, insisting on an out-of-date and unjust rule.

“The MFPA is at the forefront fighting for the change that is needed in this area.”

Earlier this month, the contest organisers had revealed a long list of candidates. Other awards and respective nominees include...
