A Sicilian councillor was among those arrested for carrying drugs on board the catamaran to Malta, the Italian media has reported.

Tony Bonafede, 31, from the Partito Democratico in Siracusa was arrested along with two other men as he was about to embark on the ferry to Malta at Pozzallo yesterday morning, the Siracusa News website reported.  They were carrying around 16 kg of cannabis and three kilos of hashish.

The three men were being monitored by officers of the Siracusa drug squad, who searched their trolleys shortly before they embarked on the ferry.

They were taken to Ragusa jail where proceedings will start against them.
