The Malta Weightlifting Association (MWA) will be hosting the third European Union Weightlifting Championships and the first Malta International Open next week.

The two meets will be staged at the Cottonera Sports Complex on May 6 and 7.

Unlike other continental championships, the EU meet focuses mainly on youth development with competitions open exclusively for junior lifters in three age groups – U-15, U-17 and U-20.

This year’s EU championships will feature some of the finest young talent from the continent as more than 100 lifters from 20 different countries will be vying for the various titles at stake.

One of the athletes to look out for at the Cottonera Sports Complex hall is Rebeka Koha. Latvia’s Koha has just won a silver medal at this year’s European Championships in Norway.

Shelby Vassallo and Shawn Incorvaja will represent Malta in the U-15 category while Shazel Gusman and Owen Bugeja will be lifting in the U-17 meet.

Rebecca Fitz and Andy Grech have entered the U- 20 championship.

Rylee Borg will join the squad for the U-15 International Open.

The competitions will be the first on the European scene for most of the Maltese lifters while those who have already made their international debut will be looking to garner more experience at this level.
