Local sailing crews are currently engaged in last-minute preparations for the annual Marzamemi Weekend Regatta, billed by many as the most eagerly-awaited event in the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) racing calendar.

The Marzamemi Regatta, this year supported by Citadel Insurance plc, will welcome over 30 boats that will be divided into various classes.

The entire fleet leaves Marsamxett Harbour tomorrow morning. Depending on weather conditions, crews will be expected to reach Marzamemi, in Sicily, later on in the afternoon.

Throughout the weekend, a number of social and racing events will take place including the heavily contested Palio del Mare, a rowing race held along Marzamemi bay.

The Palio was last year won by a Maltese crew, Team Unica, skippered by Jamie Sammut. So, the organisers are expecting Italian crews to go all out and get their coveted trophy back in their hands.

“Being the first offshore race of the season, with most boats coming off the hard, the Marzamemi Weekend Regatta is always a popular event,” Godwin Zammit, Royal Malta Yacht Club Commodore, said.

“This year the race is being backed by Citadel Insurance plc. These sponsors have regularly supported our racing endeavours, and for this we are grateful.”

Crews will race back down to Malta on Sunday, finishing off at the waters outside the Royal Malta Yacht Club headquarters in Ta’ Xbiex.

A prize-giving ceremony will take place at the club on May 6.
