Valletta Mapei secured another title in their history after making sure with a second win over Aloysians to seal the best-of-three final series 2-0.

This meant that Valletta were crowned champions after staying undefeated throughout the entire campaign.

Aloysians started the second match knowing they had to improve on their first showing in the series. In the first set they managed to do just that, keeping the momentum in their favour to win the opener 26-24.

Valletta were keen to wrap up the championship as quickly as possible. They hit back forcefully and succeeded in overturning the game in their favour by winning the next three sets 25-17, 25-21, 25-17 in a match that lasted one hour, 46 minutes.

This was Valletta’s 13th victory in 2015-16, nine of which came in the regular season and the other four in the play-offs. Six of the matches won were sealed with a 3-0 scoreline so dominant were the champions this season. No team in the league managed to stretch Valletta to a fifth set.

They won a total of 39 sets and lost just seven.

Player-coach Goffredo Guazzoni had an interesting mix of young and experienced players in his squad.

Josef Pirotta, Owen Spiteri and, occasionally, Mark Soler played in the setter’s role with Paul Tonna and Aaron Stivala also giving their contribution to the team’s cause.

In the middle, Jonathan Chetcuti and Kevin Marembert showed their true mettle when attacking and blocking effectively in key matches as outside hitters Robert Balzan and Wojciech Stellmach were the two offensive terminals who won decisive points for their team.

Seasoned libero Vince Pace also had another strong showing in the league and Filip Szewczyk and Reuben Vella were always ready to come in and help their team-mates when needed.
