Independent MP Marlene Farrugia will not attend Labour Party May Day celebrations after receiving a phone call from President Marie Louise Coleiro-Preca asking her to not stir up passions due to "the anger in this country at this time”.

The call came after Dr Farrugia had announced earlier today that she would be attending the celebrations as a sign of protest, to show that "Labour lives and is not the Panamafonseca gang on stage."

Writing on Facebook, Dr Farrugia said that she would be taking the President's advice. "To the workers who asked me to be with them for these celebrations, I say I will be there in spirit. The President has her reasons and I respect her wishes."

Dr Farrugia has been a vocal critic of the government ever since she resigned from the Labour party and its parliamentary group in November last year, and was among those who attended a PN-organised protest against corruption three weeks ago.

Addressing that protest April 10 protest, the independent MP had said: "We need to act to address the contempt to Malta's reputation which the Prime Minister has brought."
