Malta and the Russian Federation are to cooperate more closely on environmental issues such as air pollution, waste management and climate change, the Environment Ministry said today.
Cooperation will begin with a meeting of technical experts from both sides, with discussions also covering biodiversity, afforestation and protected sea zones.
The agreement, to broaden environmental cooperation between the two countries, was thrashed out during a meeting held in Moscow between Environment Minister Leo Brincat and his Russian counterpart Sergei Donskoi.
While in Moscow, Mr Brincat also addressed the EcoTech Forum on the economic opportunities green technology presented. He used his speech to tout the government's Green Jobs Strategy and its Climate Action Fund.
"Malta aims to transcend into a green economy," the minister said.
Mr Brincat was accompanied by Environmental Resource Authority chairman Victor Axiak and Environment Ministry permanent secretary Joseph Caruana.
