On Sunday, relegation-threatened Palermo returned to winning ways after beating fellows-in-distress Frosinone 2-0.

For the Sicilians, victory was only their eighth of the term – the first since overcoming Udinese 4-1 at the Renzo Barbera Stadium on January 24.

Since then, Palermo went 13 games in a row without a single win... collecting just five draws and conceding eight defeats.

It is a known fact that Palermo supremo Maurizio Zamparini has a short fuse with coaches.

After entering the world of football in 1987, when saving then Serie C2 outfit Venezia from bankruptcy, Zamparini sacked 37 coaches.

Since purchasing the majority stake in then Serie B outfit Palermo from the late Franco Sensi (the former Roma owner) in 2002, Zamparini hired 29 different coaches.

The last Palermo coach to get the sack was Walter Novellino earlier this month. But many reckon that Zamparini has now gone a bit too far.

This year, the 75-year-old became the first president to sack two coaches in the same season in the aftermath of a league success – Giuseppe Iachini following the 1-0 home win over Chievo on the 12th day and Davide Ballardini after Palermo’s away win at Verona on the 19th day.

Moreover, this season Zamparini established another negative record after firing six coaches up to February – Iachini, Ballardini, Fabio Viviani, Giovanni Tedesco, Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Giovanni Bosi.

This fact speaks for itself in that Palermo have been going through bumpy periods of transition ever since Iachini’s first sacking.

Iachini, a former Palermo midfielder, replaced Gennaro Gattuso as head coach of Palermo on September 25, 2013 at a time when the team was languishing in ninth place in Serie B.

The move turned out to be beneficial as with Iachini in charge, Palermo ran away with the league.

By the end of the 2013/14 campaign, the pink-blacks set a new record of points gained in a season (86), the highest number of away wins (13) and a new benchmark for consecutive away wins (eight).

Last season, while also launching the careers of a few quality players, including strikers Paulo Dybala (then transferred to Juventus for €40m) and Andrea Belotti (who joined Torino for €8m), Iachini’s Palermo finished in a safe 11th place with 49 points in Serie A.

This season, Palermo were set to repeat the same finish of the previous campaign but Zamparini unsettled the team with his own antics.

With three matches to go, Verona are doomed and Frosinone will probably join them in Serie B as it has become almost impossible for them to avoid the drop.

Third-bottom Palermo, with 32 points, have Sampdoria (home), Fiorentina (away) and Verona (home) coming up next.

Carpi, on 35 points, travel to champions Juventus on Sunday, before hosting Lazio and a trip to Udinese.

So, it is either Palermo or Carpi who will accompany Frosinone and Verona in Serie B next season.

If Carpi and Palermo finish the season level on points, Fabrizio Castori’s team will stay up due to their better goal difference (the head-to-head encounters with Palermo finished 2-2 and 1-1).
