I listened to the speech by Labour deputy leader andHealth and Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi to a packed hall the other day. The event reminded me of a Xarabank night.
Mizzi tried miserably to explain his position with regard to the Panama Papers affair, amid heavy applause and shouting of “Konrad, Konrad”. I listened attentively but I do not seem to have heard him say anything about his failed efforts to open bank accounts in Dubai and Panama. Perhaps that part of his speech was drowned by the continuous clapping and shouting. Unfairly, he threw the ball into Joseph Muscat’s court.
Incidentally, Muscat too stood up and applauded Mizzi. I suppose Mizzi will eventually explain to us bewildered citizens what a bank account represents apart from keeping money in it.
He should also tell us whyon earth not make use of a Maltese bank. I am given to understand that Maltese banks are very efficient and enjoy a very good reputation. It is impossible to imagine that a minister is not able to gauge the harm he is doing to Malta’s credibility by his insistence to remain in office.
The Prime Minister has also been politely told what to do by his Finance Minister.
