Piloxing

Piloxing is a non-stop cardio mix that incorporates different fitness techniques to burn the maximum amount of calories, build lean muscles and increase stamina.

The workout combines Pilates and boxing and in this manner burns fat while simultaneously sculpting the body.

The programme is a unique blend of speed and agility of boxing with the targeted flexibility of Pilates. These techniques are also supplemented by the use of weighted gloves, further toning the arms and maximising cardiovascular health. Add to that some exhilarating dance moves and you have a muscle-toning workout that is guaranteed to leave you feeling empowered.

Kettlebells

A kettlebell is a traditional Russian cast iron weight similar to a cannonball with a handle.

By their nature, typical kettlebell exercises build strength and endurance, especially in the lower back, legs, and shoulders. The basic movements, such as the swing, snatch, and the clean and press, engage the entire body at once.

Unlike the exercises with dumb-bells or barbells, kettlebell exercises often involve large numbers of repetitions for several minutes or with short breaks. This combination makes the exercise partially aerobic and more similar to high-intensity interval training rather than traditional weightlifting.

Insanity

If you’re starting a workout programme that calls itself ‘Insanity’, you know you’ll probably end up holding on to dear life by the end of the session. This is one of the most challenging fitness programmes right now.

The programme is based on a fitness method called ‘max interval training’. In traditional interval training, you exercise at a very intense pace for a short period of time, and then rest for longer periods in between. The idea is to increase your aerobic fitness level while burning fat.

This type of training has you work as hard as you can for three-minute intervals, with 30-second periods of rest in between.

Exercising at this extreme intensity level will help you burn up to 1,000 calories an hour.

There are 10 workouts in the Insanity programme. Each routine takes between 30 and 60 minutes to complete, and you may do them for a gruelling six days a week.

Over the 60-day programme, you change your workout schedule on a weekly basis. It works on your core, arms, legs, glutes and back.

Home workouts

This is perhaps the most doable form of exercise when living a hectic and busy life. And there’s no need for stretchy bands, balls or dumbbells or for state-of-the-art machinery and waiting in line at the gym.

Some of the workouts that you can do at home include a five-minute speed circuit, heart-pumping yoga, five-minute fat-blasting workout, 15-minute bodyweight workout, 15-minute abs workout and so much more.

What’s even better is that most of these workouts can be found on Youtube or other websites, giving you an instructor motivating you to keep going in the comfort of your own home.

Outdoor yoga

Many aspects of yoga are in fact about being in the moment and at one with nature or the universe.

Why settle for a replica of natural surroundings when you can have the real thing? Outdoor classes add a different dimension to one’s practice and pare yoga down to its original link with nature.

We are seeing the popularity of outdoor yoga grow significantly in Malta.

One often comes across photos of people practising yoga against beautiful sunrises at the beach with the hashtags #morningyoga or #yogaathebeach.

In fact, yoga has also become somewhat of a tourist attraction as yoga holidays in Malta and Gozo are increasingly being advertised.
