Zach Muscat’s Akragas were involved in a six-goal thriller against Messina in a Lega Pro Division C match on Sunday.

The Malta defender was again in the starting formation of the Sicilian club who needed two late goals to salvage a point at their Stadio Comunale Esseto.

The result left Akragas in 11th place in the standings on 38 points. They enjoy a three-point cushion over Catanzaro who currently hold the last relegation play-off spot with only two matches left to the end of the regular season.

Rowen Muscat returned to Pavia’s 18-man squad for last weekend’s 3-2 defeat at Lega Pro Division A strugglers Lumezzane.

He was an unused substitute as Pavia suffered their 10th defeat that left them eighth on 48 points with no chance of a place in the promotion play-offs.

Pavia trail third-placed Bassano by 10 points.

In Cyprus, Andre Schembri’s Omonia Nicosia’s push for a place in the Europa League suffered a blow when they lost to league leaders APOEL 2-0 at home.

Schembri played the full 90 minutes but could not help his team recover after conceding two first-half goals as APOEL finished the match with ten men following the dismissal of Tomas De Vincenti in stoppage time.

The defeat left Omonia in third place on 61 points, level with Apollon Limassol who stepped up their challenge with a 3-0 win at lowly Nea Salamis.

Last week, Schembri scored a decisive penalty as Omonia Nicosia reached the final of the Cyprus Cup after ousting AEK Larnaca 5-3 in a shoot-out.

The semi-final had ended in goalless stalemate after two legs were played.

In the final, Omonia play Apollon Limassol on May 18 with a place in the Europa League at stake.

On Sunday, defender Steve Borg was in the Aris Limassol team that slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Paphos in the Cyprus League Relegation Pool.

The result left Aris on 38 points, six points ahead of bottom team Ethnikos Achnas with three matches remaining.

In England, Sam Magri’s Dover Athletic could not go beyond a 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened Kidderminster Harriers.

Dover, however, still assured themselves of a play-off spot as they are fourth on 80 points, five clear of sixth-placed Tranmere Rovers with just one match remaining before the deciders.
