Gerrard: Steven Gerrard missed an early penalty but got on the scoresheet late on as the LA Galaxy beat Real Salt Lake 5-2 to move up to third. After Gerrard missed a sixth minute spot-kick, Juan Manuel Martinez put Real ahead early on but the Galaxy’s response was swift and decisive - with Gyasi Zardes, Mike Magee, Emmanuel Boateng and Giovani dos Santos making it 4-1 by half-time. Javier Morales’ penalty cut the deficit before Gerrard struck in stoppage time.

Peterborough: Peterborough manager Graham Westley has left the club following Saturday’s home defeat to Scunthorpe. The League One outfit announced the news in the wake of the 2-0 setback. Peterborough sit 14th in the division. Former Stevenage boss Westley was appointed last September but could not see the season out.

Dynamo Kiev: Dynamo Kiev retained the Ukrainian league title after beating FC Vorskla 1-0 yesterday to move seven points clear at the top of the standings with three games left. Second-placed Shakhtar Donetsk drew 1-1 with FC Chorno-morets on Saturday, allowing Dynamo to extend their lead before the arch-rivals play each other this week. Dynamo, however, are certain to win the title as they are assured of another three points from a technical win over Metalurg who recently went out of existence.

Feyenoord: Feyenoord were handed a 2-1 win over Utrecht in the Dutch Cup final after Eljero Elia’s late strike rebounded into the net off goalkeeper Filip Bednarek yesterday to give them their first trophy since 2008. With 15 minutes left Elia streaked past the defence and struck a powerful shot that Bednarek pushed on to the post only for the ball to hit the keeper’s back and fly into the net at the De Kuip stadium as Feyenoord won a 12th Dutch Cup.

Violence: The Turkish super league match between Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor yesterday was abandoned in the 89th minute after Trabzonspor fans stormed on to the pitch and attacked an official. Fenerbahce, who are second in the standings, were leading 4-0 after goals by Alper Potuk, Volkan Sen, Nani and Robin van Persie. After Trabzonspor supporters ran on to the pitch, one of them tackled an assistant referee and kicked and punched him until security intervened.
