The Youth Commission within the Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) has launched the 2016 Youth Elite Athlete Scheme whereby promising and dedicated young athletes from different sport are selected to form part of this programme.

The scheme provides financial backing to help up-and-coming athletes cover their expenses while seeking to better their abilities by attending overseas training camps, international meetings or sports schools abroad.

After a thorough selection process, the MOC Youth Commission recently shortlisted 73 athletes from 20 national sports federations.

Member federations were asked to nominate their best talents and the MOC director responsible for the scheme, Paul Sultana, is now confident that the objectives will be reached.

“From past experiences, we are hopeful that this programme will be another success,” Sultana said.

“In 2014, we had 33 athletes from 13 federations engaged in the scheme and last year, the numbers went up to 67 from 20 federations.

“We are aware of the ever-growing interest in this programme, so for 2016 we agreed to extend it to 73 athletes from 20 federations.

“The Maltese Olympic Committee has allocated €40,000 for the scheme which is more than double the 2014 amount.”
