Brian Cini (right) is the new Malta champion after defeating Alex Borg 6-4 in the national championship final at the Juventutis Domus hall, in Żejtun, late Friday.

Cini, who plays for St Joseph BC of Żebbuġ, won the opening frame but Juventutis player Borg, the 2015 champion, hit back with runs of 76, 44 and 41 to open a 3-1 lead at the interval.

On resumption, Cini compiled an excellent century of 121 but Borg was unfazed as he restored his two-frame lead.

Cini, seeking his first national title, refused to throw in the towel though and potted breaks of 53 and 74 on his way to winning the next four frames to seal an impressive comeback victory.

At the end of the match, Frans Bugeja, the MBSA president, presented trophies to the two finalists.
