Ian Micallef was recently honoured by the Council of Europe for his 15 years of service towards the Congress for Local and Regional Authorities.

During a special ceremony in Strasbourg, Dr Micallef, who also served as president of the congress, was awarded a medal for his long service and made honorary member.

He became the first Maltese councillor to be bestowed with such an honour. Addressing the congress, Dr Micallef said that although he was coming from a very small country, the congress showed that when it came to democracy and human rights there were no borders or nationalities. He is seen here receiving a medal from congress president Jean-Claude Frecon.
