I refer to the letter by Fr David Muscat, ‘Authentic Christian Democrats’, (The Sunday Times of Malta, April 17).

The letter reminded me of a court ruling by Judge Silvio Meli on October 12, 2012, and reported in the Times of Malta on October 13, 2012, under the heading ‘Judge condemns all prime ministers since 1970’.

Judge Meli had called the lack of attention by past prime ministers since 1970 as worthy of condemnation and inexplicable. In this court case, former Malta Electricity Board employees asked to be given their service pension awarded by former prime minister George Borg Olivier’s Cabinet. The agreement only needed Borg Olivier’s signature, which through carelessness never materialised.

Other pensioners have suffered a similar fate, such as the British services pensioners and Maltese civil service pensioners prior to 1979. These people have been robbed of their second pensions for years and years.

Are the politicians mentioned in Fr Muscat’s letter aware how much suffering they have caused by their deliberate apathy? Do they see what great damage they have caused to their own religio et patria party? Promising justice to aggrieved people with the intention of taking them for a ride is unacceptable.

Prejudice is unfair and goes against our beloved faith. Was not Paul Boffa faithful to the Church’s social teaching? Fr Muscat should ask Paola’s old timers about how a true Catholic caring politician acts.

I too also dream of a third party that consists of true and sincere practising Catholics – a people’s Christian party for working people who are faithful to the Church’s social teachings.
