It was good to see a number of ambassadors to Malta riding bicycles along the Ta’ Xbiex front, thus setting an example to others to use this type of transport to travel the relatively small distances that we have in Malta. However, it was most disappointing to note that none of the riders felt the need to protect themselves by wearing a cycle helmet.

Eighteen months ago, our son, Peter, was riding his bicycle along a cycle path in Amsterdam. He was not wearing a cycle helmet. He was involved in an accident and fell off the bicycle, hitting his head. He suffered a severe brain injury and nearly died. He is still in recovery today. Had he been wearing a cycle helmet he would probably have suffered no injury at all.

Wearing a helmet is not compulsory in The Netherlands but it is so in some other countries. Here in Malta, encouraging cycling should go hand in hand with the compulsory wearing of helmets, as it is with motorcycles.

So well done ladies and gentlemen for getting on your bikes but remember that you can still enjoy the exercise and protect your head by wearing a cycle helmet.
