The Water Services Corporation’s Institute of Water Technology recently hosted a meeting at its Luqa head office of representatives of partners involved in a Cost action called New and Emerging Challenges and Opportunities in Wastewater Reuse (Nereus).

The action brings together experts and researchers from various universities, institutes and organisations in 30 countries, as well as from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre. Malta was represented by two WSC executive directors currently working and promoting reuse initiatives locally.

Nereus aims to develop a multi-disciplinary network to study current challenges related to wastewater reuse practices. It specifically focuses on public health and environmental perspectives and on developing solutions for overcoming these challenges. It aims to enhance and give value to wastewater reuse.

The action intends to (a) deliver best-practice recommendations for wastewater reuse in irrigation, and solid scientific knowledge to stakeholders, policymakers and the public; (b) develop uniform means of assessing wastewater quality with respect to contaminants of emerging concern including antibiotic-resistant bacteria and resistance genes; (c) establish specifications for technologies able to produce wastewater with minimal levels of such contaminants according to the needs of the reuse practice; and (d) compile valid and reliable information to be used in regulatory frameworks.

The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (Cost) is supported by the EU Framework Programme Horizon 2020.
