Prof. Peter Xuereb, Malta's candidate as a judge at EU's general court, has been given the thumbs up, the government said today.

Prof. Xuereb satisfied the required criteria as requested by EU laws.

The government said it was confident that Prof. Xuereb will now be officially nominated to the court by the member states on May 24.

"The government is satisfied that for the first time, Malta will have two sitting judges at the EU's General Court and another in the EU's Court of Justice."

The General Court hears actions taken against the institutions of the European Union by individuals and member states, although certain matters are reserved for the European Court of Justice.

Prof. Xuereb is the head of the Department of European Law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Malta. He has served as consultant in different legal fora locally and overseas.
