Alternattiva Demokratika will be joining civil society organisations in a protest calling for the resignation of Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri on May 7.

AD chairman Arnold Cassola this morning said the Panama affair had dragged on for too long because of the Prime Minister’s procrastination.

Closing AD’s annual general meeting during which he was confirmed in the post, Prof. Cassola said it was time for people to stand up and voice their opposition to the moral degradation in the political sphere.

“Enough is enough, we want a better country where truth will prevail,” he said, roping in three slogans used by the mainstream parties.

Prof. Cassola said it was not normal for politicians to have companies in Panama and seek to open bank accounts in a myriad of countries across the world.

“It is not normal either for a politician to pay for construction work five years after it is done, or to receive a car as a gift,” he insisted, hitting out at both mainstream parties.

On the formation of a new political party that has been floated by independent MP Marlene Farrugia, Prof. Cassola said AD had to remain with its eyes open to developments in society.

The party will be willing to collaborate but this had to be based on a set of values, he added. The Green Party, he said, was anti-racist, pro-European, for civil rights, pro-environment and in favour of good governance.

“These are the values that underpin our beliefs,” he said, adding that people were feeling the need for a third political party in Parliament.

Last month, Dr Farrugia told The Sunday Times of Malta she was having talks with a varied group of people with a view to set up a political party of centre-left inspiration. She had hoped to launch a structure for the new political movement by the end of April. She confirmed having held talks with AD exponents.

Carmel Cacopardo was confirmed deputy chairperson while Ralph Cassar was uncontested for the post of general secretary.
