Floriana yesterday lodged a protest with the Malta FA over their FA Trophy quarter-final match against Birkirkara, played last Wednesday at the National Stadium.

The Greens, who were knocked out of the FA Trophy after a 2-0 defeat, are contending that a number of foreign players in the Birkirkara squad were not registered with the country’s employment bodies.

“The obligation to register professional football players on the books of Maltese clubs with the competent authorities results from the Malta FA statute and is mandatory,” Floriana said in a statement.

Floriana added that a number of Birkirkara players were not eligible to play in Wednesday’s game as they don’t have a work permit and this renders their registration with the MFA invalid.

“In view of these circumstances, Floriana FC are calling on the MFA Protests Board to recognise the irregularity committed by Birkirkara FC, annul the result of the Floriana-Birkirkara (FA Trophy) game, and declare Floriana FC winners of the match as it had done on previous occasions,” the Premier League club said.
