The secretary of the Police Officers' Union has called on police inspectors not to become a laughing stock and to promptly arrest and arraign people who violate conditions of bail.

He also criticised a police inspector for having failed to file charges against a person who bit a policeman.

Inspector Sandro Camilleri, who heads the POU/GWU said several inspectors were ignoring cases where people who were out on bail did not respect their bail conditions.

"Prosecuting officers are obliged by law to arrest and arraign those who violate bail conditions... that is a crime," Insp Camilleri said.

Police orderlies were complaining that despite their messages about bail conditions being ignored, nothing was being done, Insp Camilleri said.

He also said it was ridiculous how, this week, a person who assaulted and even bit a policeman was arraigned on other charges but not of assaulting the police. It was the magistrate who pointed out the shortcoming in court.

Inspectors should not become a laughing stock and should act in such cases, which carried up to four years imprisonment on conviction, he said.
