So here we are in these little islands of ours, wondering what is going to happen next after the latest Panamagate revelations.

As a doctor, who was one of the many thousands who elected this present party into government, I feel very uncomfortable about the present situation.

The present status quo on Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri is not doing the Labour Party any good.

On the contrary, it is causing immeasurable damage to both the party and the country.

How sad, that Malta’s present Panamagate was a leading article in the prestigious German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, and other foreign newspapers, a couple of days ago. Is it not an eye-opener to all and sundry, that there must be something terribly wrong going on?

The Prime Minister of Iceland and a Spanish acting minister had the dignity to resign, as soon as their names were mentioned in the Panama Papers.

Does it not speak volumes, when former Labour Prime Minister Alfred Sant, the present Minister of Education Evarist Bartolo and the party whip and former Minister of Health Godfrey Farrugia, openly state that both Mizzi and Schembri should resign?

Since my return to my birthplace almost two decades ago, after 27 years serving in the British Army, I have noted that the word “resignation” does not seem to exist here in Malta.

Finally, I would like to mention two quotations, which are very relevant to the present situation in these islands, and which should give us food for thought about the integrity of some of our politicians.

The first is by P.J.O’Rourke: “Politicians are interested in people, the same way that dogs are interested in fleas.”

The second one is by Nikita Kruschev: “Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build bridges even when there is no river.”
