The Valletta International Baroque Ensemble (VIBE) will be performing a selection of baroque music written for the theatre at Verdala Palace on Friday at 8pm.

The programme includes Suite from Abdelezar, Oft She Visits This Lov’d Mountain from Dido and Aneas, Sweeter Than Roses from Pausanias, If Love’s a Sweet Passion from The Fairy Queen, Strike the Viol from Come ye sons of Art, all by by Henry Purcell, and Matthew Locke’s suite The Tempest.

The performers on the day include some of the top local baroque musicians including Catherine Martin (violin), Nadia Debono (violin), Sarah Spiteri (viola/violin), Jacob Portelli (cello), Eligio Quintero (theorbo), Joanne Camilleri (continuo) and soprano Gillian Zammit.

VIBE, which is managed by the Manoel Theatre, and is the resident ensemble of the Valletta International Baroque Festival, is drawn from prominent Maltese instrumentalists who collaborate with and are coached by international baroque specialists.

It seeks to perform music from the Renaissance and baroque periods in a historically informed way on original instruments.
