Two fantastic works by Ludwig van Beethoven, full of fun and humour, will be performed by pianist Joanne Camilleri at St James Cavalier tomorrow at 7.30pm.

Performed in this recital will be Beethoven’s Variations on a Waltz by Anton Diabelli Op.120, which were composed following a request by Diabelli, who had written to 51 composers asking each one to write one variation on the waltz theme which he provided, the aim being to publish them as a single collection.

Beethoven, however, turned in 33, producing a monumental work that very successfully achieves the witty combination of lyricism and irony.  As scholar and pianist William Kinderman remarks: “No other work by Beethoven is so rich in allusion, humour and parody.”

The other work performed will be Beethoven’s Rondo Op.129, which is more popularly known as Rage Over a Lost Penny.

On this work, Robert Schumann wrote that “it would be difficult to find anything merrier than this whim… It is the most amiable, harmless anger, similar to that felt when one cannot pull a shoe off the foot”.

• Tickets for the recital may be obtained from St James Cavalier box office, by phone on 2122 3200  or online: www.kreattivita.org
