A penalty scored by Julian Galea very late in the match saved Melita in this direct clash against fellow relegation strugglers San Ġwann, yesterday.
The result leaves Melita three points ahead of the Saints with only one match remaining.
San Ġwann could not have hoped for a better start as they took the lead on seven minutes when from an Alan Borg free-kick, Stacey Vella hit home from close range.
Melita staged an immediate reaction and went close with a well-taken Alan Borg Olivier free-kick.
On 16 minutes, Melita had another chance to draw the scores level but a Jean Pierre Attard header was neutralised by keeper Sciberras.
Another Attard effort was partially blocked by Sciberras who again saved on Galea from the rebound. Then, on 34 minutes, San Gwann’s Jan Tanti ran strongly down the right flank with his following shot falling just off target.
Melita held the initiative for most of the second half but they rarely tested the Saints keeper.
San Ġwann opted for prudence and held on to their precious lead. However, just before the final whistle Melita were awarded a penalty for a handling infringement inside the Saints’ box.
San Ġwann protested heavily and had Josef Cutajar sent off. Galea, however, kept his cool and made no mistake from the spot to save the Amateurs.
