As the June 23 Brexit referendum looms over the future of Britain in the EU, the ‘Leave’ and ‘Remain’ camps keep trading blows – metaphorical, of course – in a bid to convince Britons to stay or leave the EU.
A German woman has launched her own bid to keep Britain in the EU: hugs. Katrin Lock has launched the Hug a Brit social media campaign, which calls on members of EU states to show Britons plenty of love in an attempt to convince them to vote ‘Remain’ in the June 23 referendum.
“We are EU citizens who want the British people to stay in the European Union. This is our love bomb,” Lock wrote. “Our message comes from our hearts,” she added. The campaign is aimed at those who still haven’t decided how to vote.
Lock, who has lived in London for seven years, also created the Twitter account @pleasedontgouk as part of her campaign. Inspired by the campaign, citizens of other European countries posted photos of themselves hugging their British friends under the hashtags #pleasedontgouk and #hugabrit.

Various celebrities have also joined the campaign. One Instagram message showed German Christine Ullman hugging Jarvis Cocker, frontman of the Britpop band Pulp.
Opinion polls indicate that the two camps are neck and neck, while up to 20 per cent of Britons have still not decided ahead of the crucial vote.
