The tragic shipwreck in which some 850 people lost their lives at sea close to Maltese shores last year was commemorated this morning with a walk from City Gate to the Addolorata Cemetery.

Some people carried flowers as a sign of respect for the deceased.

On April 18 last year, a boat that left from Libya capsized in rough sea. Only 27 people survived. A total 850 people drowned. Only 24 corpses were recovered and brought to Malta. They were not identified and were buried in communal unmarked grave.

The organisers pointed out that, to this day, there has been no initiative from the government to mark this burial ground with any commemorative sign of remembrance. “Everyone should have the right to be buried with dignity,” they said.
