The current storm of alleged corruption that has overtaken a number of our politicians has also thrown up calls for the foundation of a third party. Whether this is advisable or not, I have no idea. But I fully sympathise with it, and this because for those who voted for a change in 2013, it has become amply clear that matters have deteriorated rather than otherwise.

But my dream goes beyond a third party, and I fear that it is a fruitless dream. I dream that one day we may have politicians of true Catholic faith, unafraid to show themselves as such. In the past, we had politicians that in social matters were centre-left and these adhered like glue to the teachings of the Church.

These were the politicians of Religio and Patria, but today they have passed into history. This is a shame because we never needed them as much as we need them today.

Many have said to me that this dream of mine is in vain. They told me it is now fruitless to dream of politicians such as Nerik Mizzi, Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici, Eddie Fenech Adami, Lawrence Gonzi and so many others who were Christians in both creed and deed.

Today, both the PN and PL are identical in their attitude to the Church, except that one may be a little bit more anti-clerical for well-known historical reasons that do not bear repeating. But otherwise, except in the matter of the vilification of religion, they are clones of each other. They are in full agreement on homosexual marriage. On divorce there is agreement in principle. Likewise on secularisation.

From mischief I got nothing better than woe in my life. There is a great need for a new and authentically Christian party as the other two are engaged in racing each other towards the goal of full secularisation for the sake of votes.

Farewell Religio et Patria. Farewell social teachings of the Church. Farewell national identity based on Christianity. All that matters is buttering up to atheists, agnostics, humanists and the rest in a mad race for votes.

It should not be difficult to put together a party comprising a handful of individuals whose voice cries in the wilderness, like 11 witless fishermen did in front of the Pilates and Herods of their time.

I’d give it the name of Partit Malti Nisrani so that, in the alphabetical order of the voting document, the party may serve as a wedge between the PL and the PN. I love these shenanigans.
