The shipwreck off Malta which claimed the lives of some 850 migrants last year will be marked with a walk in Valletta tomorrow.

On the night of April 18, 2015, a boat leaving from Libya capsized in rough seas. Only 27 people survived. Twenty four of the corpses who have never been identified were recovered and taken to Malta and buried in a communal unmarked grave.

"To this day, there has been no initiative from the Maltese government to mark this burial ground with any commemorative sign of remembrance. Unsatisfied with this state of being, we are taking the initiative to organise a peaceful walk from City Gate, Valletta, to Addolorata cemetery in Marsa to pay our respects to the victims of this shipwreck," the organisers said in a statement.

"This will be a walk to remember the ones who lost their lives at sea one year ago, and will be organised for those who think that everyone should have the right to be buried with dignity."

A commemorative sign on the grave would need permission from the authorities. Donations and flowers will be welcome tomorrow.

Those taking part are urged to meet at 10am at City Gate in front of the Parliament building in Valletta, or later at 11.30am at the main entrance of Addolorata Cemetery.
