The people’s disapproval of the pathetic manner in which this country is being governed extended as far as the prison. Thanks to the Times of Malta’s pressure a group of female inmates were paid within a week for their services rendered months ago.

These inmates have experienced a worse than “precarious work” situation, ironically emerging from the Marigold Foundation set up precisely with an objective to positively empower people and to work with them to raise standards, support initiatives and strengthen voices.

The media – referred to as unprofessional when providing information to the people on this reality – was instrumental in bringing about justice where due thus reflecting a genuine respect for the people.

As you rightly wrote in the editorial of April 7: A free press is not a luxury, it is a necessity. This is even more applicable within the current context where accountability, transparency and meritocracy are practically non-existent; where government is failing the media and the party in Opposition is presenting a strong shield to the people.

More people are evaluating and becoming aware of the difference between dishonesty and honesty in terms of media and politics and are – even publicly – acting accordingly. They are equally appreciating this indispensable role.
