In light of recent Panamanian affairs occurring both on a national and international level, I would like to express my opinion on the situation we are facing due to the pledged loyalty the majority of us possess towards a political party, irrespective of whether it’s the Labour or Nationalist party.

Last week, the attention was deviated from the Panama papers scandal and shifted to Jason Azzopardi’s case by former police commissioner, Peter Paul Zammit. PN supporters resorted to bring their disapproval of the case outside the courts and show Azzopardi how much they adore him and think he is right on the matter.

As long as diehard PN supporters didn’t come toe to toe with Labour officials they were doing nothing wrong. However, tension escalated quickly when PN supporters noticed PL officials.

The incidents there could have been avoided easily were it not for the provocative decision by Labour’s youth branch and the lightheaded PN supporters, some of whom resorted to make aggressive and violent physical contact with these officials.

This is the monster a two political parties system conceived ages ago, forcing Maltese people into a colonial mentality, afraid of using their minds, thinking their thoughts aren’t good enough for progress.

This is something which have only caused regress in our country. Proof of this are: the diminishing number of registered floaters, lack of ideas in governing, only three political parties, the third one possessing no political influence at all.

What baffles me is how some of these diehard supporters deal with the disapproval of others, including their own children. Some families have ended up being broken due to political belief different from the father’s.

That is intolerable. Such supporters behave like a herd of sheep, easily controllable and manipulated.

For once, let’s remove the red and blue flags and hoist the one flag that unites us: the red and white one.
