My congratulations to Marlene Farrugia and her group  for taking the reins in hand and attempting to pull this country out of the morass of political intrigues we have had for the past 95 years.  The problem is the old political system to which both major parties subscribe in a mirror image, direct in opposition, where what is white for one party is black for the other. This is a sign of immaturity which we should have outgrown by now.

The unsophisticated electorate are to be blamed for this because they are the ones that put forward our leaders and have been nurtured in a feudal tradition where the village leaders, the baron, the count, the padrone, the minister, the parish priest, etc. rule the day. Under the present circumstances I have felt unable to vote for either party.

My sentiment is that the democratically-elected leader is the Prime Minister of all Maltese people and should be assisted and supported  to provide good governance and not obstructed at every  step of the way. This, of course, does not mean no criticism but criticism of a constructive nature.

This new ‘Modern Progressive Party’ will serve the above functions and act as a buffer to enable the party in power to deliverbetter governance. Once this new party achieves credibility it will attract new leading talents from the public and, hopefully, grow in status equal to the other parties.

A major goal of the new party is to educate the children and the electorate in democratic principles and in the philosophy of the late US president John Kennedy: “Not what the country can do for you but what you can do for the country.”

My good wishes for the new party to flourish and grow and I am ready to vote in power Marlene Farrugia, Salvu Mallia,  Franco Debono and Arnold Cassola.
