It's the stuff of science fiction: a personal hoverboard that can zoom around at speeds of up to 150 km/h.

Yet a Youtube video released by Zapata Racing - the company that developed the water propulsion Flyboard - suggests that the holy grail of personalised flight is closer than you might think.

Will we be hovering to work in a few years' time?

In the video, company founder Franky Zapata can be seen strapping on a helmet, squeezing a trigger and subsequently zooming around a lake on what can best be described as an airborne platform.

Zapata are not the only people developing hoverboard technology. In May 2015, Canadian inventor Catalin Alexandru Duru travelled 275m at heights of up to 5m over a lake, setting a Guinness World Record in the process.

But Zapata Racing's prototype blows those figures out of the water. The company claims that its prototype can fly at up to 10,000 feet and autonomously for up to 10 minutes.

But the footage does not show just how Mr Zapata takes off or lands, and the company has so far kept details on just how its invention works to a bare minimum.

Zapata have named their hoverboard the Flyboard Air, and it appears to use a turbine engine fuelled by a backpack worn by the rider.

Could we all be zooming to work on personal hoverboards in a few years' time?
