Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has had talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and hasvisited the  AlZa’Atari refugee camp in Jordan, where some 89,000 people from Syria have found shelter.

The camp is being run by the Jordanian government with assistance from the World Food Programme and UN agencies.

Dr Muscat was shown around parts of the camp including a school and a hospital, and spoke to administrators and refugees.

He said the refugee crisis reinforced the need for the international community to work towards a resolution of the crisis in Syria as quickly as possible.

He said Malta would continue to put pressure on the EU to further assist countries such as Jordan and Lebanon as they sheltered thousands of refugees.

Dr Muscat was accompanied by, among others, Foreign Minister George Vella.

During his meeting with President Abbas Dr Muscat discussed the recent French initiative on the Israel-Palestine peace process.
