Over 300 students from different University faculties donned habits as they took to the stage over the weekend for the annual student festival held at Sir Temi Zammit Hall.

This year’s production, Is-Sister Act: All for nun & nun for all! was inspired by the popular Sister Act film and chronicled the adventures of Deloris and a feisty group of nuns.

The decision to base the production on a Broadway musical was a first, according to KSU culture and entertainment coordinator Steph Dalli.

In more recent years, productions were inspired by Disney films, she said.

While inspired by the popular musical, the students decided to give the production a modern twist, making the main character Deloris a lesbian who only joined the nunnery to pursue her lover, another nun.

At the end of the day, through the adventures of the main character Deloris, we wanted to bring out the importance of being accepting while also working as a team

The twist, Ms Dalli said, was chosen purposely to highlight the importance of acceptance. “At the end of the day, through the adventures of the main character Deloris, we wanted to bring out the importance of being accepting while also working as a team. It was all about friendship and forming meaningful bonds with others.”

The students also did not shy away from having their say on current affairs, she said, subtly making reference to ongoing political issues.

“They weren’t vulgar jokes; we didn’t want that sort of satire. But they were still funny jokes that highlighted some of the things going on at the moment.”

According to Ms Dalli, the students were responsible for every aspect of the production, from writing the script to designing sets, creating choreographies and managing logistics. A live band accompanied the cast.

“The number of people who came to watch this year was incredible and the feedback was amazing. It was a very satisfactory experience for everyone involved. It is surely an experience that will be missed,” Ms Dalli said.
