As expected, Għajnsielem beat bottom-placed St Lawrence Spurs last weekend to condemn the Saints to Division Two football next season.
The Blacks dominated for long stretches to prevail 3-0 but their winning margin could have been more pronounced.
Charles Hili saw his effort smack against the St Lawrence goal-frame early on before the referee awarded the Blacks a penalty for a foul by Darko Stojanovic on striker Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza.
Milos Stojanovic opened the scoring from the spot.
Għajnsielem’s Ferdinando Apap scored twice either side of half-time to put the issue beyond doubt as the Saints continued to struggle to keep up with their more enterprising opponents.
Keeper Elliott Fenech did well late on to stop the leaders from adding more goals to their tally with a couple of smart saves while Dhonatan Santos Da Hora’s effort came off the crossbar.
Second-placed Xewkija Tigers gained revenge for the upset to Kerċem Ajax in the GFA Division One KO final last week after beating the Greens 3-2 to stay six points behind Għajnsielem.
The match was tense with goalmouth action at both ends of the pitch.
Xewkija had an excellent start, taking the lead after just 50 seconds when John Camilleri guided a header into the net from a Cedric Sciberras centre.
But Kerċem levelled on 17 minutes. Xewkija keeper Steve Sultana failed to hold a Claudio Antunes shot and Shaun Attard netted from the rebound.
The pace was frantic and six minutes later the Tigers regained the lead with a low drive by Thiago Melo Dos Santos after a perfect Camilleri delivery inside the box.
After the break, Xewkija increased their advantage to 3-1 following a tap-in by Camilleri.
On 73 minutes, they could have made sure of victory when Dene Shields had a fine header stopped by the upright. From the rebound, Daniel Bogdanovic lifted the ball high with an open goal at his mercy.
Xewkija rued that missed opportunity as the Greens reopened the issue on 82 minutes with an Antunes goal from a corner action.
However, the Tigers held on to their slim lead for the rest of the match to keep their flickering title hopes alive.
In midweek, Victoria Hotspurs edged Oratory Youths by the odd goal in five.
Manwel Cordina gave Oratory a 10th-minute lead but the Hotspurs turned the result in their favour thanks to Moussa Bamba (20) and a brace from Sunday Baala (67, 70).
Joseph Grima reduced the arrears for the Youths 16 minutes from time but the Hotspurs held out to secure the three points and join Kerċem on the 26-point mark.
Xagħra promoted
Leaders Xagħra United secured promotion to the top division after beating Għarb Rangers 2-0 on Wednesday.
Marlon Mamo scored both goals for Xagħra who maintained their unbeaten record.
Nadur Youngsters moved a step closer to promotion after a comprehensive 6-1 win over bottom-placed Qala Saints.
A Christian Debono double and a goal by Brandon Said before half-time put Nadur on their way to victory. They made sure with three other goals after the break through Michael Zerafa, Saviour Attard and substitute Elijah Xuereb.
Qala scored their only goal midway through the second half through Dylan Bellotti.
In another match, third-placed Sannat Lions stayed in the race for a top-two finish following a 1-0 win over Żebbuġ Rovers.
Kenneth Bonnici scored the decisive goal on 64 minutes.
The two sides ended the match with a player less on 89 minutes after Anthony Zammit (Żebbuġ) and Sannat substitute Aaron Touarha were sent off for fighting.
