A 41-year-old Italian man who resides in Hamrun has been handed a one-year jail term suspended for three years and fined €2,000 for harassing and stalking his estranged partner.

Luca Burroni, who works as a travel executive, pleaded guilty to all charges brought against him this morning before Magistrate Doreen Clarke.

The court also ordered the destruction of two laptop computers and a mobile phone belonging to the accused. Furthermore, the Magistrate issued a three-year protection order on his estranged partner, and ordered the accused to keep away from her.

Any breach of this protection order would mean the conversion of the suspended sentence to an effective one-year jail term, and open up the possibility of a further fine and another 6-months imprisonment over and above the original punishment, the court warned.

Police inspector John Spiteri prosecuted.
