The traffic priority lane which takes buses and other vehicles from Gzira to Ta' Xbiex is to be suspended while works are carried out on the Kappara junction, but the opposite side of the road, taking traffic to Sliema, is to become single lane, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi has said.

The works start this month are to continue in phases for all of next year.

As part of the temporary measures, Rue d’Argens will be two-lane uphill and Qui-si-Sana seafront will be two lane in one direction towards Sliema strand and Gzira.

Triq is-Sebħ will be widened to three lanes to take the traffic to Msida.

Because of resultant parking restrictions, a park and ride system will be provided, the minister said.

Other temporary traffic arrangements are being made in San Gwann.

The road from Swieqi to San Gwann is being widened.

He said parts of the regional road would be kept open for as long as possible but motorists would be urged to use alternative roads.

The minister regretted that some inconvenience would be caused but said every effort was being made to minimise it. The traffic arrangements are being made in coordination with the various local councils.

The minister was replying to questions in parliament by Labour MPs Godfrey Farrugia and Godfrey Agius Decelis and Nationalist MPs Marthese Portelli and David Agius.

Meanwhile Sliema council said today that resurfacing works will be carried out on parts of Tower Road late today, starting from 6pm.
