Today will be the last time cinemagoers can go to see Chiamatemi Francesco showing at Eden Cinemas.

This is an Italian feature-length biopic about the life of Argentine Jesuit priest Jorge Mario Bergoglio, beginning when he was a young priest serving in the most deprived parts of Buenos Aires, and culminating in his rise to power in the Vatican, where in 2013 he became the head of the Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Francis.

It’s a journey of humanity and spirituality lasting over half a century, challenging and testing the faith of Bergoglio. From becoming the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, the film follows him to the unforgettable night in St Peter’s Square where he is dressed in white, and with a metal cross, he greets the world with his new name, Francesco. The investigative film is written and directed by Danielle Luchetti who wished to uncover the truth about a man of faith, and a man who believes.

“I tried to tell his story by ‘walking’ by his side,” Luchetti explains. “I tried to put all the clues together, to analyse his gestures during the sermons and interviews before his election. Above all I tried to be faithful to the truth of his story and to the laws of storytelling.”

The film stars Rodrigo de la Serna as Pope Francis, and has an original score by Spanish composer and pianist Arturo Cardelús.
