Gaulitana’s second week presents a mixture of genres, from jazz to baroque featuring various line-ups.

Today: Crossover To Jazz – A Year After!

Jazz pianist Mirko Matera will perform a concert of various jazz compositions and improvisations involving piano and electronics.

Tomorrow: Fluting
Mina Ghobrial, flute; Stephen Attard, piano (Egypt/Malta)

Acclaimed Egyptian soloist Mina Ghobrial won the 2010 French International Flute Convention. In his recital, he will perform works by Mozart, Telemann, Gluck, Monti and Faure together with two compositions by himself and contemporary composer Bassam Nour El-Deen.

Wednesday: Schumann – piano music

A returning artist in Gaulitana is Alexander Frey, once defined by Bernstein as “a wonderful spirit”. His piano recital will be devoted entirely to works by Robert Schumann. The Romantic composer is mostly revered for his compositions for this instrument.

Thursday: Franck – organ works

On Thursday, Frey will present an organ recital dedicated to works by Cesar Franck, a master of the genre. His works, often symphonic in texture and form, present the beauty of the instrument which adorns churches.

Friday: Tubaroque
Chris Spiteri, tuba; Alex Vella Gregory, piano (Malta)

Friday’s concert will feature two Maltese eminent artists: Chris Spiteri and Alex Vella Gregory. Trained in Italy and the UK respectively, they will feature in an atypical concert featuring the tuba as a solo instrument in works from the Baroque period.

Saturday: 300 Years of Organ Music

Frey continues his celebration of the organ with a recital presenting works by various organ composers, including Bach, Couperin, Guilmant and Widor.

Sunday: 12 Strings
Kevin Moindaze, Luis A. Saldivia, guitar duo (France/Chile)
St Augustine Church, Victoria

The final concert of the week is by the Franco-Chilean duo who will perform classical works combined with folk numbers, presenting the guitar’s wide palette of timbres and colours.
