Victoria Azarenka completed the Indian Wells and Miami Open double by beating Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3 6-2 in 77 minutes in the Miami final, yesterday.

The Belarusian is the first to win both tournaments back-to-back since Kim Clijsters in 2005, and only the third ever, with the first being Steffi Graf.

Azarenka moved up to number five in the WTA’s rankings.

Despite Azarenka struggling with her serve in the first set – the quality of both her and Kuznetsova’s return meant eight of the set’s nine games resulted in service breaks – she secured a convincing 6-3 win to continue her run of not having dropped one set throughout in Miami.

At 5-2 down in the second, Russia’s Kuznetsova earned a break before Azarenka impressed with her first ace of the match at 106mph beyond her reach.

The 15th seed then produced a poor backhand miss and a poor forehand to secure Azarenka’s win.

“Teamwork makes the dream work,” Azarenka said afterwards.

“(My parents) gave me roots so I always know where I came from and they gave me wings to fly.

“Thank you for tennis. Without this loving sport I wouldn’t be standing here and going after it every day.”
