Last month, St Julian’s local council became the latest locality to join the Greenpak waste recycling scheme. Free green recycling bags will be distributed to each household and a door-to-door educational campaign will be conducted to increase environmental awareness among St Julian’s residents.

During the past two years seven localities have joined the scheme, resulting in an average increase of 20 per cent in the total recyclable waste material collected. The increase in recycling is even more pronounced in certain localities, such as Mosta, which registered a 34 per cent increase in total waste material collected in its first year upon migrating to Greenpak’s scheme.

Qormi, Swieqi, Santa Luċija, Santa Venera, Msida and Naxxar all experienced significant improvements, with most scoring higher-than-average percentage growth during their first year with Greenpak’s scheme.

Greenpak Coop Society CEO Mario Schembri said the scheme now covers over 74 per cent of the Malta’s population. “In each locality served by Greenpak, we have introduced amenities to help communities achieve higher environmental performance in an economically viable manner. This entails a combination of methods, including the provision of bring-in sites, kerbside collections and direct collections from commercial outlets. We make it a point to sit with each local council to address their specific needs and provide tailor-made solutions,” added Mr Schembri.

For more information about the collection schemes, bring-in-sites and other information residents may call their respective local council or Greenpak on 2166 1081 or e-mail info@greenpak.com.mt.
