(3-2, 3-1, 2-1, 5-6)

The Maltese Under-17 national team had an auspicious start to their EU Nations Junior Women’s Cup Group B qualifiers after beating England 13-10 in Denmark, yesterday.

Elena Borg scored eight goals and Sophie Camilleri added three as the Maltese held back England’s rally for a shock result on the opening day of the tournament.

Sam Murby opened the score for England inside the first minute but that was the only time when Anthony Farrugia’s team were trailing as they hit back strongly and at half-time led 6-3.

Jordan Parsons pulled one back for England at the start of the third session but goals from Camilleri and Borg extended Malta’s lead to 8-4.

The fourth session was tense as England pulled back to one goal behind (11-10) with a minute to go. However, two quick Borg goals settled Malta’s nerves and the victory was sealed.

The other two teams in Group B are host country Denmark and Wales.

The EU Nations Junior Women’s Cup tournament comes to a close tomorrow with the classification and medals matches.
