The Malta Football Association will be requesting to be part of criminal proceedings against Seyble Zammit in the match fixing as an "aggrieved party" in the case, it said today.
Mr Zammit, 21, was charged on Monday with a number of match-fixing charges relating to the UEFA U-21 Championship Group One qualifiers between Malta and Montenegro.
The MFA also said it will be embarking on a sports disciplinary process as soon as the case was concluded so as not to interfere with the work being carried out by the police.
Mr Zammit was remanded in custody after being charged with having initiated a match-fixing offer and then proposing it to other footballers. Zammit, a youth player with Valletta, is the son of Ivan Zammit, a former Malta international midfielder.
Malta lost 1-0 at home to Montenegro in last weel's match. Police told the court that the Malta Football Association received information that attempts of match-fixing may also have been made for last Tuesday's game between Malta and the Czech Republic, which the Czechs won 7-0.
Defence lawyer Mario Mifsud said his client, who pleaded not guilty, had a clean criminal record and he was "just the little fry in a large, complex web".
