Title contenders Kalkara St Joseph and Marsa St Michaels continued to lead the National Championship standings as the season is fast approaching its climax.

With only five matches to go and two points separating both teams, the head-to-head encounter scheduled for April 22 will surely decide who will be crowned champions this season.

At the other end of the league table, Birkirkara Juventus Vero Amore look destined to play in Division Two next season with either Ħamrun Education Bar ‘A’ or Gudja POs Bar ‘A’ joining them.

In Division Two, the two promotion places look to be almost done and dusted with Mosta Horseshoe and Gudja POs ‘B’ sitting comfortably in first and second places, respectively.

Meanwhile, the first phase of the national team selection was completed with 16 players booking their place at the next stage.

Among the major contenders are Albert Scerri, Gordon Stanmore and John Agius.

Scerri, who played for the national team these past five years, said: “All depends how I play on the day but if I’m on form I expect to make the squad again.”

The experienced Stanmore reckons his chances are bright.

“I rate my chances at 90 per cent, at present,” he said.

“I’m playing well at the moment so my aim is once again to be part of the selection.”

Agius is an up-and-coming player. He only started playing a few years ago but is reaching high levels during championship matches.

“This is only my third year playing the sport and I believe in my potential,” he said.

“I’m very optimistic but everything depends on how well I play on the day of reckoning.”
