Pigs escaped from a broken down lorry and began "running free" on a motorway, police said.

Motorists were advised to drive with care after the pigs fled the vehicle at about 3pm.

One of the pigs ventured on to the carriageway close to Junction 30 of the M5, near Exeter services in Devon.

The pigs were then loaded back into the lorry which was later recovered from the scene.

Devon and Cornwall Police tweeted: "Lorry broken down nr J30 M5. Please drive with care, it appears that a number of pigs have escaped from said lorry and are running free."

A force spokesman said: "We posted the tweet for people driving in the area to be careful on the M5.

"We had one pig on the carriageway. The vehicle was broken down. They had to get thepigs back into the vehicle."

The force spokesman said the incident log had now been closed.
