Italy head coach Antonio Conte has announced he will leave the Azzurri and seek a return to club management following this summer's European Championship in France.

The former Juventus boss is reportedly moving to Chelsea, whose one-time manager Carlo Ancelotti is out of the running for Italy as he has agreed to replace Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich.

Here, Press Association Sport's James Cann runs the rule over some of those who could replace Conte.

FABIO CAPELLO

The former England and Russia boss won four Serie A titles and the Champions League with AC Milan, and a further Scudetto with Roma, as well as tasting success with Spanish giants Real Madrid.

But the veteran tactician has said he is "not interested" in the Azzurri job after enduring fraught tenures with England and then Russia. It will take a serious financial offer to change Capello's mind.

MASSIMILIANO ALLEGRI

Tuscany's Allegri is the current toast of club management after guiding Juventus to a fourth straight title and the Champions League final, while the Bianconeri are well on their way to another Scudetto.

His agent has distanced him from a move away from Turin, however, and the Serie A leaders are understood to be close to securing the in-demand 48-year-old on a new long-term contract.

ROBERTO DONADONI

Donadoni has already led the Azzurri, but he had big boots to fill in replacing Marcello Lippi immediately after Italy's World Cup triumph back in 2006. A disappointing Euro 2008 campaign saw the former AC Milan midfielder lose his job in unceremonious fashion.

He has since rebuilt his career at Napoli, Cagliari, Parma and Bologna, and he could well reject a recall from national team bosses in favour of bidding to realise the latter club's undoubted potential.

ROBERTO MANCINI

The long-serving Sampdoria striker has excelled as a coach, winning trophies with Fiorentina, Lazio, Inter Milan, Manchester City and Galatasaray.

Mancini, who admits he came close to replacing Cesare Prandelli following the last World Cup, is not pulling up any trees in a second spell at Inter and might expect to be overlooked on this occasion.

FABIO CANNAVARO

The cheap - and controversial - option. World Cup-winning defender Cannavaro is only 42 and has not achieved much in coaching roles with Guangzhou Evergrande and Al-Nassr in China and Riyadh.

But he is available and close in both age and thinking to the current Italy squad, having lifted football's greatest prize alongside the likes of Gianluigi Buffon. He would be an innovative but risky choice.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Claudio Ranieri (Leicester), Francesco Guidolin (Swansea), Giampiero Ventura (Torino), Walter Mazzarri (unattached) and Antonio Cabrini (Italian women's national team).
